It is always hot in Darwin, and if the temperature dips below 30C the locals will think it is cool. There is not shortage of beautiful beaches in Darwin to discover, but there are many months throughout the year where it is not safe to swim thanks to jellyfish who call that area home.
Thankfully there are some fabulous places that you can visit to help you find relief from the heat and you also get to enjoy some stunning scenery at the same time.
Lake Bennett is a comfortable day trip from Darwin with just under 100km each way. This large lake is a safe place to swim, but also has the benefit of a resort situated on the waters edge so you have access to a restaurant and bar plus you can hire canoes and go paddling around. The lake is teaming with Barramundi, so this would be the perfect spot to try your hand at fishing and see if you can catch one of those delectable creatures.
You will need a very full day to visit Buley Rockhole as it is located about 2 hours out of Darwin. In return for the effort, you will be mesmerised by the beauty of Litchfield National Park that is worth exploring on foot. When you need to cool down there are a selection of water holes with cascade features that will do the trick nicely.
This safe swimming spot is not far from the city centre and is located right next to the beach. Enjoy a walk along the sand and then cool down in the lake during the months where it is unsafe to splash in the ocean. There are plenty of walking and cycling paths around the lake, a playground to keep the kids happy and BBQ facilities if you want to make a day of it.
BERRY SPRINGS NATURE PARK
Just one hour out of Darwin and you are in a little of nature that is perfect if you love a good long walk before a BBQ lunch. The water is safe to swim in and crystal clear. Pack a pair of goggles and you will be able to do plenty of fish spotting whilst you get relief from the heat.
Before you head off for a nice dip, make sure you have a swimsuit!
